The Project

The project began in 2019 with applied research on gold leaching in alluvial sands of the Amazon and surrounding areas, from which master theses, papers and patents were developed on the procedure and design of the pilot plant for obtaining gold in an eco-friendly and sustainable way, without the use of mercury. Some of the project’s application vectors are the identification of possible ways of obtaining energy in remote locations by means of electrochemical processes, the use of scientific knowledge in the field of electrochemistry to solve environmental problems, and the development of eco-friendly sensors for the detection of different pollutants in society. The project’s intended restoration of the ecosystem takes place both in mining liabilities (land contaminated with mercury) and river zones that exceed the permitted limits for mercury, further leading to a better quality of life for the flora and faura of the areas bordering the Amazon riverbanks.

The grantee

Grupo de Investigación de Electroquímica Aplicada (GIEA)

Grupo de Investigación de Electroquímica Aplicada (GIEA), or the Applied Electrochemistry Research Group is a consolidated team with different projects within green chemistry and electrochemistry. Through the use of science, they solve different problems and improve the quality of life.
