Mallorquin VIVE is a community initiative for the restoration and protection of the Mallorquín marsh in Barranquilla, Colombia. The Mallorquín marsh is the most important coastal lagoon in the Colombian department of Atlántico and is considered the fifth largest wetland in the country.The project seeks to promote community leadership for the conservation and defense of the Mallorquin marsh through strategic and action plans to strengthen capacities and skills in territorial climate change management, ecological restoration, planting techniques for mangrove nurseries, and the promotion of gender and intergenerational equity in communities around the marsh.By conserving the marsh, which is an Environmental Reserve Area, the project will help the city be on the path to sustainable development and becoming a low-carbon region. The project’s rehabilitation of ecosystem services, will also greatly serve the nearby populations.
