Black communities bear a heavier burden from the impacts of climate change and environmental injustice because of the historic and continuous impacts of colonialism, racism, and inequality, yet are largely underrepresented in environmental narratives, media, and the green workforce.Named after the Black woman environmental justice pioneer, Hazel M. Johnson, this fellowship program will afford students the opportunity to receive paid hands-on learning experience and direct mentorship from Black Girl Environmentalists (BGEs) who work in the fields they are interested in pursuing.The program, focusing on increasing opportunities for early-career Black women and gender expansive individuals to enter the climate workforce, will place 10 Black Girl Environmentalists at green workspaces across the following disciplines: climate tech, environmental justice, renewable energy, conservation, music, and fashion.
